Regulations Regarding Lighting in Schools
Lighting in schools is regulated by laws intended to ensure safety and comfort for both students and teachers. In Poland, the key standards are defined by the Regulation of the Minister of Infrastructure and the Regulation of the Minister of National Education and Sport, which clearly specify how lighting must be adapted to educational facilities.
Light Intensity Standards in Classrooms
According to the standards, light intensity in a classroom should be at least 300 lux. However, in areas requiring greater concentration, such as at the blackboard, this value may reach up to 500 lux. Why is this so important? Insufficient lighting causes eye strain, which reduces concentration and learning efficiency. On the other hand, lighting that is too strong can be equally uncomfortable – which is why finding the right balance is essential.
Light Color and Placement
In classrooms, light color is of great importance. Standards recommend using neutral light in schools, similar to daylight (around 4000K), as it supports focus and does not strain the eyes. Warm light (3000K) may create a relaxing mood, which is not always conducive to mental work, while overly cool light (5000K) may feel harsh or irritating. That is why maintaining the right balance is key to achieving optimal conditions.
Lighting Uniformity – How to Avoid Shadows?
Lighting uniformity is equally important. Lamps in schools should be arranged in a way that prevents dark corners or areas where the light is too intense. Shadows or glare on desks can distract students, which does not help them focus during lessons. It is important to ensure that light sources are evenly distributed throughout the classroom, providing comfort for every student, regardless of where they are seated.
Color Rendering Index (Ra) – Natural Light Quality
The color rendering index Ra (CRI) determines how accurately light reproduces real colors. The CRI scale ranges from 0 to 100, where 100 represents light similar to natural sunlight, offering the most accurate color rendering. In the context of school lighting, especially in classrooms, it is advisable to ensure a CRI of at least 80. This provides natural color reproduction, which is essential when working with teaching materials, drawings, maps, and similar resources.
However, in areas where color precision is particularly important, such as art or technical classrooms, a CRI of 90 or higher is recommended. This allows students to see and reproduce colors accurately, which is especially important when working with details, painting, or designing.
UGR (Unified Glare Rating) – Visual Comfort
The Unified Glare Rating (UGR) is a parameter that measures how much lighting may cause glare. If light is too intense or bright, it can cause glare, which may not only distract but also strain the eyes. This is particularly important in schools, where students spend long hours in classrooms – lighting must therefore be properly selected to prevent discomfort. Lighting standards recommend that in classrooms the UGR value should be below 19. This level minimizes the risk of glare.

Modern lighting technologies not only help meet regulatory requirements but also contribute to improved student well-being and reduced energy costs. Which solutions work best in school corridors, classrooms, and other areas?
1. LED Lamps – Modern and Energy-Efficient
At the forefront of modern lighting solutions are LED lamps. They have been widely adopted in schools in recent years, and for good reason. LED lamps are energy-efficient, allowing for significant reductions in building maintenance costs. In addition to consuming much less energy than traditional light sources, they also have a very long lifespan, meaning fewer replacements and less maintenance. Moreover, LEDs offer extensive possibilities for adjusting both light intensity and color, which is extremely important in different school areas.
2. Smart Lighting – The Future of Schools
Modern schools increasingly implement smart lighting systems, for example those based on Bluetooth Mesh technology. This solution enables the creation of a network of intelligent lamps that can communicate wirelessly with one another. Thanks to Bluetooth Mesh, schools gain full control over lighting – lamps automatically adjust light intensity depending on the amount of daylight entering through windows or the presence of students in the room. Such systems not only improve comfort but also significantly reduce energy consumption, as lighting operates only when truly needed.
3. Lamps with Adjustable Light Color – Comfort Throughout the Day
Modern lamps with adjustable light color functions are an ideal solution, allowing lighting to be adapted to different needs throughout the day. Thanks to a lighting control system, it is possible to smoothly change the light color – from warm and relaxing to cooler tones that support concentration. This is an excellent option for schools, where different activities may require different types of lighting. Such a system makes it possible to create ideal conditions for both learning and relaxation, depending on the time of day or the type of activity taking place in the classroom.
